Lots of stories have been passed around about the old building in the distance from Condado De Alhama. Antonio from FINCA BUTRON shares some more local history of our much loved little piece of Spain, Alhama de Murcia.
Miguel Primo de Rivera was the first dictator of Spain in the XX century, from 1923 to 1930, he promoted infrastructures in Spain, not only roads, ports ,and military bases like Castillitos called the guns by some British residents. Also he created a big improvements to the railroads, one example is the old railroad from totana to Cartagena which passes next to Condado de Alhama. This railroad was never finished due to the fall of Miguel Primo de Rivera and the change of the political system in Spain.
Many men worked there, one of them was actually my great grandfather, who worked building the railroad, specially building the old railroad station of Cañadas del Romero which nowadays you can see from Condado de Alhama if you look to right side of the motorway RM23 as you head towards Mazarron.
This station was build to provide fresh water to the old locomotives. Nowadays you can still see 2 different floors, the first floor was designed to be the station with an area to sell tickets, but mainly this area was designed for loading and unloading the train of agricultural products and farm animals.
The idea was not only to create a rail connection with Cartagena and mazarron, it was also to bring agricultural production of the Salinas or Saladar, which is the flat area from Condado to Totana.
On the second floor was different rooms for accommodation and storing goods, and right outside the different water tanks which even nowadays are used and contain some water, which is collected from the rain and different underground wells in the area.
There used to be a bridge next to Condado which was crossing the national road which was replaced with the motorway.
You can still follow the railroad track to go to Totana from El Pareton but the conditions are not so good from Condado to El Pareton but after that the treck is good because of the pavement. This is called la via nueva at Totana, the new rail road.
My great grandfather built at home, next to the other bridge which it was built on the road to Los Canovas , a small restaurant for the workers of the railroad at the family home which now is really close of our allotment area. Actually we own part of the railroad which is crossing the farm on the east end of it.
Just a few kilometers from our farm and allotment area you can still finding the junction of La Pinilla, which was the junction of the railroad to mazarron.
Is a nice walk along the old railroad on the way to our finca from Condado , it is a flat easy walk all the way, where you will be able to enjoy beautiful landscapes.
